WEEE latest - September 2004 We are now in the final year for the WEEE directives being transposed into UK law. The DTI have published their third consultation paper and it is important that everyone has their input into this consultation. This way the government are fully aware of your particular needs before the final implementation is completed. Afterwards is too late.
Copies of the consultation paper can be found on the DTI website www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability/weee and can be downloaded in PDF format.
The consultation period is three months, so the earliest that the UK can have WEEE regulations in place will be during the first quarter of 2005. The August 2005 date for producer’s responsibility to start will not change.
Although there will be no targets set for reuse at this point, we at Weee Recycle Ltd still consider that reusing parts or whole equipment is cost effective as well as being the best form of recycling. There are many companies being set up to assist producers with handling their WEEE recycling, but we still feel there is a stage before when many items can be recovered for reuse.
The main issue when the directives are enforced will be the rules around items like batteries on Printed Circuit Board’s and the boards themselves. If the directive UK transposition states these have to be removed before automatic granulating, then hand dismantling will become cost effective. We wait with anticipation.
Why wait until 2005?
The WEEE regulations may not cost you money; in fact you could save money. Do not wait until you are forced into recycling, you could be saving money NOW and at the same time be a greener company.

WEEE latest - May 2004 The August 2004 deadline for finalising UK legislation on WEEE implementation draws ever closer and the government and industry are currently working hard to finalise the consultation process. The second phase of consultation required responses by 1st March 2004 and there now remains just one more consultation phase, with the next paper being issued in the early summer, before draft legislation is drawn up. If you haven’t seen any of the consultation papers they can be found on the DTI website. The main thought coming out of the consultation papers is that WEEE will be handled by a clearing-house in the UK. The papers concentration mainly on the recycling of WEEE, as the reuse element, which figures highly in the directive, has no target figures yet. In 2008 the directive will be revamped and targets will be set for reuse. At Weee Recycle we still consider that reuse is the best form of recycling, but also understand that manufacturers do not want refurbished equipment put back into the marketplace. We believe that a different approach is required, which maximises the benefits for both the environment and manufacturers. Want to know more? |
